Grants

Though Federal grants are generally scarce for graduate or doctoral students, it's still possible to secure grant money that doesn't have to be repaid.

As well as making satisfactory academic progress, graduate grants may also require you to complete research in your major or chosen field. Fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year because grant requirements often change.

Federal Pell Grants
Federal Pell Grants are generally awarded only to undergraduate students, but you could be eligible for a Pell Grant if you are enrolled in a post-baccalaureate teaching certification program. If you qualify, the Pell Grant amount you receive will depend on your income, educational costs, and enrollment status. See Pell Grant for more information.

Institutional Grants
Many schools have their own grant programs, available to graduate or doctoral students interested in a particular field of research or community service. Check with your school's financial aid office along with your department office for more information on available institutional grants. See Institutional Grants for more information.

Research Grants and Fellowships
Like institutional grants, research grants and fellowships are awarded to graduate or doctoral students who are studying a specific area of research, publication, or creative work. Unlike institutional grants, many research grants and fellowships are not limited to a specific institution. Some are also awarded to bring a promising scholar into a specific institution.
