Scholarship Requirements

Scholarships can be an important part of your graduate or doctoral financial aid package. Receiving a scholarship may mean recognition for your achievements by a company, community organization, or your educational department.

Once you receive a scholarship, you'll certainly want to keep it. Use the following tips to maintain your scholarship as you obtain your graduate or doctoral degree.

Mind the Details
Your scholarship comes with its own specific rules and responsibilities. Some scholarships are awarded only once, while others are renewable every year you're in school. If you collected letters of recommendation, transcripts, and other information to apply for the scholarship, keep a copy of the information in case you need it again the following year. You may want to stay in touch with the donor.

Keep It Up
If your scholarship was based on performance or achievement, you may have to meet certain requirements such as completing community service hours, maintaining a minimum GPA, or completing certain classes or research in your major. When you receive a scholarship, you should also receive information about renewal. If not, contact your donor for specific information on your merit-based scholarship's requirements.

Know Your Options
You're allowed to receive many different scholarships at once. If you decide to apply for multiple scholarships, be sure to stay organized. Keep deadlines, forms, requirements, and all other paperwork on desk calendars or software programs with automatic date and deadline reminders. Each individual scholarship may have slightly different deadlines and requirements, and you may need to apply at different times for renewal.

Be proud of your scholarships and include them on your resume. Take the time to learn about your scholarships, and they can benefit you even when the monetary benefits cease.
