Pell Grants
If you qualify, the Federal Pell Grant can make a big difference in your search for funding. The Federal government provides eligible students with Federal Pell Grants of up to $4,500 per academic year to cover educational expenses.
Unlike student loans, you typically don't need to repay a Pell Grant unless your student status changes. As a student seeking your bachelor's degree online, you may qualify for a Pell Grant. There's no age limit for a Pell Grant and you can receive a Pell Grant attending part-time.
Eligibility Requirements for the Pell Grant
Your eligibility for a Federal Pell Grant depends on the income and asset information you submit on your FAFSA. If you are a dependent student, the FAFSA will require parent income and asset information. The Pell Grant amount you receive depends on your cost of education as well as your enrollment status. As a part-time student, the amount of Pell Grant you receive will generally be less than the amount a full-time student would receive. If you leave school for any reason or if your student status changes, you may be required to repay some or all of your Pell Grant funds.
Applying for the Pell Grant
Complete a FAFSA to have your eligibility for Pell Grant automatically determined. You must complete a FAFSA each year you are in school, to stay eligible for the Pell Grant and other grants. You can check your Pell Grant eligibility by contacting your school's financial aid office.
Keep Your Information Honest and Current
The Pell Grant application is free, despite what some online scammers might suggest. There is also no secret formula to keep or maintain your grant funds. Your application information, however, is automatically checked against your tax return records, so it's important to be honest on your FAFSA. Dishonesty on your FAFSA can keep you from getting a Pell Grant and can even keep you from attending school altogether. Use current, correct information on your application and if your income or student enrollment status changes, contact your school's financial aid office as soon as possible to update your financial aid information.
