Acad Comp Grants
If you've completed a rigorous educational program in high school, you may be eligible to apply for an Academic Competitiveness Grant, which became available for the first time in 2006-2007. To qualify, you will have to meet the following criteria:
- Graduated from high school after January 1, 2005
- Are a US citizen
- Qualify for a Pell Grant during same academic year
- Be enrolled full-time
- Be a freshman at the beginning of the term
- The amount of the ACG grant in combination with other financial aid does not exceed demonstrated need
- Have completed a rigorous high school curriculum, as defined by the US Department of Education
If you qualify, you can apply for the grant for both your freshman and sophomore years of college. If you receive the grant as a freshman, you must have completed your freshman year with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA to be eligible as a sophomore.
What is a Rigorous High School Curriculum?
In order to meet the 'rigorous curriculum' qualifications, as set out by the US Department of Education, your transcripts should reflect one of the following:
- You've completed your secondary degree at a school designated by the Department of Education as exemplary
- You've scored a '3' or better on at least two Advanced Placement (AP) tests or a '4' or better in International Baccalaureate (IB) courses
- You've completed your secondary studies with at least
- 4 years of English
- 3 years of math
- 3 years of science
- 3 years of social studies
- 1 year of foreign language
If you're still not sure if you qualify, your high school guidance counselor and/or college financial aid advisor can review your transcripts to determine if you meet the criteria.
Maximum Amount Given
If you qualify for an Academic Competitiveness Grant, you could receive up to $750 toward your freshman year. If you maintain a 3.0 GPA your freshman year, and you otherwise qualify, you could receive up to $1,300 in your sophomore year.
To apply for an Academic Competitiveness Grant, you need to complete the FAFSA.
