Deadlines
In addition to the education you'll receive in your field of study, college can also teach you about staying organized and meeting deadlines. Your homework, research papers, and projects all carry deadlines. There are deadlines for registration, signing up for classes, and financial aid. The latter should be of top importance to you, because your college existence may completely depend upon it. A little organization can make the transition easier.
Invest in a Calendar
Having a monthly calendar for the sole purpose of tracking financial aid deadlines can make keeping deadlines easier. Pick something that suits your needs, whether it's a calendar software program for your computer, a large desktop calendar, or a daily planner. Make sure there's room to write in the important deadlines.
You may want to keep a 'financial aid only' calendar to include the FAFSA deadline, deadlines for grants, scholarships, or other financial aid for which you're applying, and due dates for student loan repayment.
Call for Help
Your school's financial aid office is there to help you. If you have any questions about deadlines or other financial aid related information, drop them an email or pick up the phone. By the way, it's smart to include this phone number and email address in your financial aid calendar.
Finding Deadlines
Your financial aid office will have specific deadline information. But generally, government aid deadlines are as follows:
FAFSA on the Web - the filing period for this form is January through the end of June following the award year. Priority deadline is generally in March or April but check with your school for their specific priority deadline.
- FAFSA Corrections - can be filed up until mid-September following the end of the award year.
- State financial aid - varies from state to state; check with your financial aid office.
- Income tax return - file by IRS deadlines in mid-April - you may have to submit a copy to the financial aid office to verify information you or your parents submitted on the FAFSA.
Missing deadlines can often mean missing out on aid. Remember, staying informed and organized can make the deadlines less crazy.
