How to Keep Aid

Each type of aid has different specifications you need to follow in order to maintain your financial assistance. To keep your undergraduate financial aid, find out the rules and regulations attached to each scholarship, grant, loan, or other education financial resource you receive. In addition to that, you can also:

  • Stay organized. You should keep a file of all the paperwork connected to your financial aid.
  • Keep track of deadlines. Make sure know all the deadlines. Missing deadlines can mean missing financial aid.
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible each year.
  • Check in with your financial aid office, lender, or other institution to ensure you don't miss any important changes. Make sure to place any letters or emails that pertain to your financial aid in your financial aid file.
  • Keep your address current. If you change addresses, inform your school and your financial aid providers. This way you won't miss any important information they might send you.
  • Maintain your GPA. Some scholarships and grants require that you maintain the minimum GPA in order to keep receiving money.
  • Update your income. If your income either increases or decreases, it may affect your financial aid package so notify the financial aid office.
  • Maintain your enrollment status. The amount of aid you receive is generally based on a specific enrollment status. If that changes, notify the financial aid office.

If you drop out of college mid-term, you may have to repay some grants or scholarships you've already received. If you decide to take a break from school, but plan to return, talk with a financial aid advisor to find out how this will impact your aid. You may be able to resume your aid package once you return to school, so it's best to check with the financial aid office if you plan to leave school for any reason.

Staying informed and organized can help you keep your financial aid through graduation.
