Pell Grants
Unlike student loans, you generally don't have to repay a Federal Pell Grant. The Federal government provides annual Pell Grants of up to $4,500 to cover the costs of fees and tuition and related educational expenses.
As a part-time student, you may qualify for the need-based Pell Grant. There's no age limit for a Pell Grant so you should apply even if you're returning to school after a long period away.
Pell Grant Eligibility
The amount of Pell Grant you actually receive depends on a few important factors, such as your educational costs, student status, and your expected family contribution. Part-time students may receive less money for the year than full-time students based on reduced enrollment status, but if you choose to take more hours in the future, you be eligible for more Pell Grant funding.
Apply Online
Applying for the Pell Grant is easy. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. Most educational programs require that you complete a FAFSA as part of the financial aid application process, and your Pell Grant eligibility is automatically calculated. Once you've completed a FAFSA, you can check with your school's financial aid office for information on your application status.
Watch for Scammers
Be wary of companies that claim to help you get Pell Grants or other Federal grants in exchange for an application fee. The government does not have an application fee for the FAFSA, It's important that you're honest on your application. Filing a fraudulent FAFSA can disqualify you from obtaining a Pell Grant, and can even keep you from attending school. Contact your school's financial aid office if you've made a mistake on your FAFSA. They will advise and help you resolve the problem as soon as possible.
