Grant Requirements

In addition to existing Federal grant programs, the Federal government set aside an extra $760 million for two new grant programs that will be available beginning with the 2006-2007 school year. It's a good time to be a student, and securing a Federal grant can make your educational experience even easier.

A grant is one of the best deals in financial aid, and once you become eligible for one, you should do everything you can to keep it. Some grants require that you continue in your major or teaching program, or maintain a minimum GPA. Check out the following simple tips to keep your grants.

Keep Your Major
The new SMART Grant requires students to choose a major in high demand in the global economy. If you're receiving a SMART Grant, it's because you're interested in science, math, engineering, technology, or certain critical foreign languages. Switching majors could affect your continued eligibility for the grant. Contact your school's financial aid office with any questions.

Study Hard
Some Federal, state, and institutional grants require you to keep at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA). If your GPA drops below 3.0, your grant could be in jeopardy. Be sure you know the GPA requirements for any grants that you receive. If you're unsure whether you're in danger of losing your grant, contact your school. Leaving school or changing your enrollment status could also affect your grant.

Watch the Calendar
Every year, to renew your grant, you need to complete a renewal Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can fill out the forms online as early as the January prior to the upcoming academic school year, and you can make corrections if needed after that. Completing the FAFSA and other forms early makes it less likely that you'll forget in the rush of finals and summer vacation.

Because grant programs can differ vastly from one another, you should be aware of the deadlines and other requirements in order to be prepared for the year ahead. Keeping these tips in mind can mean less stress during your school year.
